Introducing Arky

We built Arky because we believe thinking is spatial — and our tools should be too. Here is the story of why we built it and where we are going.

Introducing Arky: A Spatial Canvas for Complex Thinking

We built Arky because we kept running into the same problem: our ideas were non-linear, but every tool we had forced us to think in straight lines.

The Problem With Linear Tools

When you sit down to write a report, plan a project, or study for an exam, you rarely start with a clear, ordered outline. You start with fragments — a half-formed insight here, a relevant quote there, a connection you noticed between two things you read last week.

Tools like Google Docs, Notion, and Word ask you to resolve all of that messiness before you start typing. They give you a blank page and expect you to fill it top-to-bottom.

That is backwards.

Thinking is Spatial

The way we actually think — the way we associate ideas, cluster concepts, and discover structure — is spatial. We draw diagrams on whiteboards. We scatter sticky notes across a table. We write things on index cards and move them around until the structure reveals itself.

Arky brings that process to your computer.

What We Built

Arky is a canvas where you can lay out your raw thoughts freely, then shape them into a structured document. Every item on the canvas is a shell — a node that can contain text, sub-shells, and eventually become a section of your document.

When you are ready to write, you switch to docs mode and your canvas becomes a focused, linear document. The structure you built visually becomes the outline of your writing.

The key insight: structure and writing are two different activities, and they deserve two different interfaces.

Where We Are Going

We are just getting started. Here is what we are working on next:

  • AI that understands your structure — not just your words, but the relationships between your ideas
  • PDF import and annotation — drag highlights directly onto your canvas
  • Real-time collaboration — think together, not just write together
  • Export to PowerPoint and PDF — your canvas, your format

Join the Beta

Arky is in open beta and free to use. We would love for you to try it and tell us what you think.

The best feedback we have gotten so far: "It feels like thinking out loud, but organized."

That is exactly what we are going for.
